NZTA National Standard for the Quality of Truffle and Mushroom Seedlings

  • The NZTA National Standard for the quality of truffle & mushroom seedlings relies on a detailed testing protocol involving the combination of microscope and DNA analyses targeting both the inoculum prior to its use and the whole root system of seedlings at the end of the production cycle in the nursery (1 to 2 years and up to 3 years in some cases). Quality requirements of the plant are included.

  • The standard has been circulated to incorporate feedback from industry stakeholders and has been peer-reviewed by Dr G. Chevalier, a European specialist, and one of the pioneers of truffle seedling cultivation, who approved it in February 2022. The standard is similar to the one used in France by world-leading nurseries and is designed to meet the same purpose as the one currently in place in Australia.

  • Seedlings are to be tested by a party independent from the nurseries and conducted by independent specialists. Testing is non-destructive. Seedlings that pass the evaluation are returned to the nurseries.

  • In early 2024, the NZTA launched a Working Group involving all interested parties (producers, testers, NZTA representatives) to progress the implementation of the standard and to revise/upgrade it as required. As the industry matures the Working Group will ensure the standard maintains its relevance and efficacy for the industry.
